Chicago Cubs are favorites to win the World Series
With frenzied fans celebrating into the night, Chicago Police is working overtime.
As you might imagine he’s not alone amongst this jovial bunch of young Cubs that made history in two ways on Tuesday evening in front of an electric crowd at Wrigley Field.
They weren’t at any point in the series. “That’s never what we’ve aspired to do. We came up just a little short”. But losing is losing. “We left it all on the line, and we got beat”. Beating the Cardinals was a big enough win in and of itself, but the Cubs aren’t finished with their mission yet.
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta’s son Cooper pours champaign to his father’s mouth after the Cubs won Game 4 on Tuesday. That all changed when they won three straight games to knock out the Cardinals. Both choices are strong ones for the Cubs no matter who they end up playing.
Heading into the series against the Cardinals, it was obvious that the Cubs had the better lineup and much more power at the plate. No one ever claimed it. “If we lose in the NLCS, we still lose”.
“Marty McFly can’t be wrong”, the shirt read, in reference Michael J. Fox’s character in the 1989 sci-fi classic film that predicted a Cubs World Series victory in 2015. That’s the ultimate goal. After a 4-0 loss to John Lackey in the series opener, Rizzo and company clubbed 10 homers in the last three games.
Oh, yeah. This is not even the first time they did that. The homer was Piscotty’s third of the postseason.
Lester didn’t want this series to go back to Busch Stadium and reached out to manager Joe Maddon, saying he could pitch in Game 4. Holliday, trying to play with a quadriceps muscle twice torn during the season, had two singles in 16 at-bats.
And they poured and sprayed bubbly, embraced each other, their families and friends under nighttime skies on the field of their iconic ballpark after taking the NLDS from the Cardinals.
Its obvious this home run will last with the baseball community long after these playoffs are done – and the first step is being taken by the Cubs.
“It’s a shame that three of the best teams in baseball, one is only moving on to the championship series, ” Rizzo said.
The Chicago Cubs will send Jon Lester to the mound for Game 1 of the NL Championship Series against the New York Mets, and Javier Baez will start at shortstop after Addison Russell was shelved by a left hamstring injury.
The ball landed on top of the right-field video board. Pinch-hitter Brandon Moss followed with a single to right.
What could have been a lead was only a tie.
“There’s good things going on in this clubhouse”, said Rizzo. With that being said, watching them clinch Tuesday night at Wrigley was a sight to behold.
