Bradley Cooper teams up with female actresses for equal pay
The Silver Linings Playbook star spoke to reporters this week on the heels of Jennifer Lawrence’s essay about the pay gap between men and women in Hollywood, and Cooper’s comments suggest he may be an ally in fixing this problem!
“I don’t know where it’s changing otherwise but that’s something that I could do”, Cooper said. “It’s time to start doing that”, Cooper told Reuters.
She realised the extent of the wage gap after seeing information come to light from the Sony email hack, indicating that Cooper, Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner earner significantly more than she or Amy Adams did for American Hustle.
“She worked every day on that movie and got paid nothing”.
Chastain said she actually made less than a quarter of that. Hopefully more male actors will take a cue from Cooper and start being transparent with their salary offers in a bid to help their female co-stars negotiate for fair pay. He went on to say that he hoped Lawrence’s essay would inspire other women to speak out, including their American Hustle co-star, Amy Adams.
“When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with dicks, I didn’t get mad at Sony”, Lawrence wrote.
The 40-year-old said it was “fantastic” she’d chosen to make her feelings known saying her popularity would give the cause a great “platform”.
The Oscar-winning actress blasted pay inequality between the sexes but admitted she had failed to tackle the issue out of fear of being labelled “difficult” or “spoiled”. “And that was a large part of the ambivalence and the worry that I wouldn’t necessarily know who I was or what I could do if I got married to someone who was going to chart a path that he was incredibly clear about”.
Jennifer Lawrence’s op-ed speaking out against the gender wage gap is making quite an impact: Hollywood has rallied in support of her message, and it looks like D.C.’s taking note, too! And she bravely admits that, “her desire to be liked inhibited her ability to ask for money for fear that people wouldn’t find her as endearing anymore”. “There’s a double standard in the whole world, yeah, for sure”, he told Entertainment Tonight of J. Law’s essay. She also wrote about improving herself for the better in order for her to get the salary that she deserves. “This is an element of my character that I’ve been operating against for years, and primarily based on the statistics, I don’t consider I’m the only lady with this challenge”.
