UK Man Arrested in Connection to Threat Causing Lockdown at Wilfrid Laurier
The language in the post was similar to a threat issued before the fatal shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon earlier this month.
Police said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the National Cyber Crime Unit – part of the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency – the FBI and the MPS were all involved in the investigation.
The man was arrested in London on Friday, and the charge laid Saturday.
A 22-year-old man has been arrested in London, England in connection with an online threat that caused a lockdown of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Waterloo campus Friday.
Wilfrid Laurier’s Waterloo campus was shut down for almost six hours Friday morning after police and university officials made a decision to enact emergency procedures with regards to the threat.
The university says its special constables received a tip about a threat to the school’s science building and immediately notified authorities.
Dietrich said that threat was posted online to the anonymous 4chan forum.
The lockdown comes during the fall term reading week, meaning fewer students, faculty and staff are on campus. The lockdown was lifted around 11:30am.
Another said it was “aggravating” not to have more information about the lockdown, while others expressed concern for their classmates and colleagues.
