Former Duke guard Liston earns first WNBA championship with Minnesota
It was competitive, it was back and forth, and it was ultra close.
The Indiana Fever had a two-point edge after the first frame but then faded and became an unrecognizable team. They also captured titles in 2011 and 2013.
Congratulation to the Lynx on the 2015 WNBA Championship, and to theIndiana Fever who exceeded expectations by getting to the Finals and putting on an excellent show.
Anyone who says that people don’t care about women’s sports hasn’t met the fans of the Minnesota Lynx.
The duo have been a central part of a few of the best years of Lady Tiger basketball, including the team’s Final Four runs in the 2000’s, along with becoming the first two former Lady Tiger basketball players to play for the U.S. Olympic team in 2008 and winning gold medals in both the Beijing and the 2012 London Olympics. Yet, they only trailed by six at halftime thanks to their defense.
Their lack of rhythm and flow offensively would continue into the second half. The dominant defensive showing spilled into the third quarter, where the Fever mustered just eight points. With 10 minutes remaining, they already had 20 turnovers (to just 11 field goals). She joins Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Swin Cash (all teammates of hers on the undefeated 2002 national champion Connecticut team), Moore and Kara Wolters (also UConn), Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, and Tamika Catchings (who was on the wrong side of the ball with Indiana Wednesday). She finished with 13 points on 6-for-15 shooting.
In the aftermath of Wednesday’s 69-52 loss to the Minnesota Lynx in the climactic Game 5 of the WNBA Finals, Catchings wasn’t ready to forecast anything.
“It’s been fun, but the (most fun) thing for me has been playing with her”, Catchings said, referring to their time together with Team USA.
White seconded that emotion, talking about her pride in a team that was an afterthought in the Eastern Conference in a season dominated individually by Chicago’s Elena Delle Donne and by the resurgence of the New York Liberty. This is the fourth time in WNBA history that the championship series went to a fifth game…. Whatever opportunity you have this season, you want it that much more because you don’t know. “I said that I’m going to come back next year and would love the opportunity to play”. It was so slow and everybody was trying to move. First and foremost, we didn’t do anything easy.
Prince is a HUGE Lynx fan – he attended the WNBA championship… and during his concert, he congratulated the ladies while putting signs that read “2015 WNBA Champions” on the video screens.
