Houston Cougars and Tulane football game tonight
Friday’s game against Houston marked the 20th meeting on the gridiron between the Green Wave and the Cougars.
On their second drive of the third quarter, the Cougars got big plays from senior running back Kenneth Farrow to quickly move down the field, before Ward took it in from a few yards out for his third rushing touchdown of the game, making the lead 35-7.
Tulane fell to the undefeated Houston Cougars, 42-7 in a contest played Friday night at Yulman Stadium.
Despite three starting offensive linemen sitting out with injuries and losing its starting center to illness early, Houston piled up 461 total yards, including 239 on the ground, and went 7 of 15 on third down. Stopping Ward is no doubt the key to the game for Tulane, and any remote chance that they have of winning this game will depend on them figuring out a way to render Ward ineffective. Sophomore running back Dontrell Hilliard punched it in on the next play to cut the lead to 14-7.
The Wave’s aggressive four-man defensive line, which has helped the Green Wave record 39 tackles for losses, faces off against Houston dual-threat QB, Greg Ward Jr. – who is the only player nationally to average over 200 yards passing per game (260.4) and over 100 yards rushing per game (110.8). It was Ward’s fifth game this season with multiple touchdown runs. The lead could have been even more but Tulane linebacker Nico Marley stepped in front of a Ward pass late in the second quarter as the Cougars were looking to put more points on the board.
Tulane finished with more penalties (12) than first downs (11) and also punted 11 times. Tulane Green Wave, on the other hand, ranks No. 118 in rushing offense at home with 115.0 yards. The over/under for this game is 63.5 total points. Well, you know, all they did was a score on their first offensive play from scrimmage against Tulane. “They are phenomenal teams in our conference”. The Green Wave had no answer for his speed (77 rushing yards) or his arm (completed 17 of 25 passes for 222 yards). Teddy Veal caught four passes for 31 yards while Devon Breaux caught three passes for 88 yards.
