Israeli soldier killed by Arab gunman, as police step up security
Arab residents, who have long complained of discriminatory Israeli policies, say the latest closures are driving them to a boiling point and will trigger more violence.
“They are uniting us”, said Adel Obeid. The meeting with Netanyahu is slated for Thursday, if the security situation allows the premier and a few of his top ministers to travel to Berlin on Wednesday for an already once-postponed government-to-government German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The manager of a gun shop in Jerusalem said hundreds of people come looking to buy weapons every day.
After the attack, a crowd of Israelis gathered outside the bus station and chanted “death to Arabs”.
“It’s a painful moment here in Israel, it’s a moment when I am certainly here in solidarity with the people of Israel”, de Blasio said during a visit with students from a mixed Israeli-Palestinian school. Israel continues to expand Jewish settlements, chipping away at territory sought for a future Palestine. Abbas refuses to engage under such conditions.
Netanyahu, meanwhile, rejects the notion that Palestinian attackers, including those in Jerusalem, are driven by anger over decades of Israeli rule. The only change in the status quo has been efforts organized by the Islamic Movement in Israel and other “outside forces” to bring explosives into the mosques on the site and “attack Jews from them”, he said. It is also a responsibility of Jewish people worldwide to obligate the countries in which we live to immediately cease the economic and military support of the ongoing Israeli occupation in Palestine and siege of Gaza. “But the primary problem here are the deliberate lies being spread” about the shrine, he said.
The shooting occurred amid a string of other clashes this weekend across Israel.
Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed the area in a move that is not recognized internationally. Palestinians make up 37 percent, or 316,000, of Jerusalem’s total population of 850,000. We can’t go anywhere and they ask us where we go and when we come back. These included authorising the police to seal off or impose a curfew on parts of Jerusalem, easing firearms laws for Israelis and stripping alleged attackers from east Jerusalem of their residency permits.
Over the past month, eight Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks, a lot of them stabbings.
Those who stab Israelis and then get killed are glorified; it’s another type of suicide attack, Daniel Nisman, president of the Levantine Group, an Israeli security analysis firm, told the Times.
Israeli leaders say the violence is due to Palestinian incitement. Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem have been encircled by Israeli troops, and roads have been blocked with concrete cubes.
The municipality said the wall would eventually cover a 300-metre strip, stressing it would not be peripheral and it was being placed where “there is a history of stone and firebomb throwing at Jewish homes and cars”. They line up about 20 feet from the checkpoint out of Isawiyya.
