Ingold has 2 scores, Wisconsin stifles Purdue for 24-7 win
The Wisconsin Badgers did what was expected of them at Camp Randall on Saturday, handling the less-equipped Purdue Boilermakers for a 24-7 win in Big Ten Conference play.
Quarterback David Blough struggled, throwing 21 for 49 for 207 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
Purdue defensive coordinator Greg Hudson acknowledged the potential strength of the Wisconsin rushing game but pointed out another way that the Badgers could surprise a defense. Purdue’s offense managed an abysmal 191 yards for the entirety of the game. Finishing the day with career-high 16 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss, Edwards also forced a fumble late in the fourth quarter with Wisconsin up by 17 to cap off the team’s late-game charge.
Strangely, the Badgers did not punt in the first half, and they outgained the Boilermakers 272 yards to 61. It may seem that a reduced number of plays could make the offense too predictable for a talented Badger defense, but according to head coach Darrell Hazell, that is not a concern.
“This defense, the reason it’s playing well is they don’t care about the numbers”. Junior Jimmy Herman, who started the season as an outside linebacker but missed two games due to a hamstring injury, played the middle position in Bentley’s absence, and junior Andy James remained in Herman’s old spot.
It capped the worst stretch of the afternoon for Wisconsin. But if he can’t go, the Badgers like the next option, redshirt freshman Michael Deiter.
“People can look at the 1-6 and say whatever they want”. Blough said coaches had him focusing on proper footwork.
Still, it took a while before Wisconsin could assert control. The generous field position was all the Badgers needed to get going. Ogunbowale carried 18 times for 117 yards in the game.
The drama ended midway through the fourth quarter – thanks largely to UW’s defense and special teams – freshman tailback Alec Ingold eluded three defenders for the most impressive 1-yard touchdown run this season by the Badgers.
First half: M – Sarkisian 7, 19:52.
“Every week, we have plays and opportunities for running backs to catch the ball out of the backfield, and today we took more advantage of it. We got things opened up for the wide receivers with guys looking at me, so it definitely helped the offense”. Junior/sophomore Ani Sarkisian received the ball just before midfield and dribbled through five Badger defenders before pulling the trigger just inside the penalty box.
“We’re going to see those two tight ends… not a whole lot of spread formations”, Hazell said.
