Coach K stepping down as Team USA Coach after Rio
Krzyzewski told ESPN’s Andy Katz that he’ll step down after the 2016 Olympics and that a succession plan to replace him will be announced in the coming year before the Games in Rio de Janeiro next summer.
Mike Krzyzewski is one of the most accomplished coaches at any level of any sport right now.
USA men’s Olympic basketball team head coach Mike Krzyzewski, center, talks with assistant coach Jim Boeheim, left, during a practice in 2012.
“It is. It definitely is [my last stint]”.
“Hopefully we can finish things up well with Rio and I would move onto something else with USA Basketball”, Krzyzewski said, according to the report.
Coach K and Jerry Colangelo have done an fantastic job reviving USA Basketball and both deserve enormous credit and appreciation.
Krzyzewski, who is 75-1 as the US coach since being hired in 2005, led the United States of America to gold medals in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London.
As of now, USA Basketball has not yet named Krzyzewski’s successor. That announcement should come sometime in the next year before the Rio Games.
Krzyzewski still isn’t sure who will want to play in the 2016 Olympics as there are a lot of factors that still need to play out but he expects good representation. But he did say the next coach should have worldwide experience.
Since then, Krzyzewski’s teams have been undefeated, and the other teams in the system have also performed brilliantly.
