Marlins’ Dee Gordon might avoid DL despite dislocated thumb
Marlins All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon may be able to avoid the disabled list despite dislocating his left thumb.
Major League Baseball Network showed a highlight from the June 12 Fox Sports Florida telecast during which Marlins third base coach Lenny Harris warned Gordon to hit the bag with the heels of his hands, rather than his fingertips. He was chosen to start in the All-Star Game for the first time. He may fill in at 2B for All-Star Dee Gordon, who is expected to be sidelined at least a week with a dislocated left thumb, president of baseball operations Michael Hill said. The Reds have scored six runs in their last three games and three or less runs in six of their last seven games.

Two of them scored when Reds shortstop Eugenio Suarez fielded Adeiny Hechevarria’s grounder, spun and threw a mile wide of the plate. He was 4-1 in his career against the Marlins, but took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) and seven hits in five innings.

The Marlins hammered out a season-high 21 hits, including three by Gordon, but the mood was somber postgame because of Gordon’s injury.
Against Haren, the Reds went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position. Reds manager Bryan Price said RHP Anthony DeSclafani (strained gluteus), who missed Saturday’s turn, will not miss his next start….
The St. Louis Cardinals said left fielder Matt Holliday, who has been out more than a month with a quadriceps tear, will not play as an elected starter in the All-Star game.
Miami could struggle to support their starter again Sunday against Cueto (6-5, 2.61), who tossed a two-hitter in a 5-0 win at Washington on Tuesday.
