GM Takata recalls extend to 2015 Camaro, Malibu, Equinox
General Motors is recalling more cars and SUVs – this time over issues with side airbags made by Takata.
The latest expansion of Takata air bag recall to 400 additional GM vehicles indicates that the problem continues to widen with no end in sight.
The inflators in the airbags could rupture, and throw shrapnel into the driver and passengers.
“It would not surprise me if other people decide to deal earlier and faster with these issues”, Rosekind said.
The recall means that the air bag problems are growing to the newer models and into side air bags.
GM is expected to begin notifying affected customers on October 19. ( GM ) has yet again announced a recall.
After testing revealed the explosive defect at a Takata plant in Mexico, General Motors is recalling certain 2015 Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Malibu and GMC Terrain vehicles, according to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A few have suggested that auto design, including how well-sealed passenger compartments are against humidity, could also be a factor. Accordingly, the first phase of the campaign launched today will target owners of recalled vehicles in the geographic regions of persistent heat and high absolute humidity in the following states and regions: Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii, the Outlying U.S. Territories, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi.
Takata said in a news release on Monday that it has increased production of air bag replacement kits to 1 million per month.
