Watch Mets Fans Boo the Hell Out of Chase Utley
When Utley’s two-game suspension was handed down Sunday night – for what MLB deemed an “illegal” take-out slide on the Mets’ shortstop Ruben Tejada – there were rumors that the league would try to expedite the appeal hearing before Games 3 or 4 of the series in New York. Down 2-1 to the Expos, the Dodgers won Game 4, 7-1, by scoring two runs in the eighth to break a tie then four more in the ninth, then won a tight Game 5 thanks to a ninth-inning home run by Rick Monday off Steve Rogers that sent the Dodgers to the World Series.
The fans in attendance essentially dedicated the night to Utley, the Mets’ longtime adversary who broke the leg of starting shortstop Ruben Tejada with a vicious takeout slide in Saturday’s Game 2.
The resolution came nearer with 13 runs, a two-games-to-one lead in a series where three games win it, and another chance in the home ballpark the next day.
New York went on to beat LA 13-7 and now take a two games to one lead in the National League Division Series.
With only three days between outings, Kershaw is scheduled to start Game 4 of the NL Division Series against the New York Mets.
“Our team is built on power”.
Cespedes hit. 283 with 22 home runs and 54 RBIs after the All-Star break during the regular season and led the charge in Monday’s comeback win against the Dodgers, finishing the game 3 for 5 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs.
All of the pressure is on the Dodgers here tonight and the Mets managed to get the win against Kershaw in game 1 of this series.
“He worked harder tonight to give us five quality innings than I have seen him work at any time”, Collins said. The Dodgers, however, are 0-9 in their last 9 road games when playing a team with a win rate above. Treon Harris now takes over under center and quite frankly, I’ve never been really impressed w/ his play. And Chase Utley, who was one of the best players, not only at his position but in the game from 2005 through 2009, will have his hard-nosed style of play cemented in the minds of us all who will remember this event for good or bad when it comes time to debate his candidacy in the watered down version of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Mets also had four straight singles to start the inning.
The bottom line is clear: The league wants to prolong the careers of its stalwarts, and it found in Utley’s slide, which resulted in Tejada’s indefinite sidelining, the ideal case to bolster its arguments.
“And that’s what Kershaw has done ever since I’ve been here”. The three-time Cy Young Award victor lowered his playoff ERA to 4.59, and he emerged with a victory for the first time in three postseason starts when pitching on three days’ rest. His statistics and accolades speak for themselves: in eight seasons, Kershaw has combined for the 114-56 record (a. 671 winning percentage), to go along with a 1,746:466 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a 2.43 earned run average.
“I think the boos at the introductions were kind of a big statement”, Harvey said. While his hit total is still low (49 in 57.2 innings pitched), Kershaw just doesn’t look as comfortable or as confident when the stakes are high.
Although he had a strong 2013 NLDS (2-0, 0.69 ERA), he has otherwise struggled mightily.
MLB.tv Postseason Package – A package from the league that lets you catch postseason games streaming on your computer and other devices.
But as a Stony Brook, Long Island native, he definitely has plenty of fans rooting for him.
In the meantime, Utley could have played, but the Dodgers started Howie Kendrick at second in both games.
