Huge Hole in sun emitting solar wind at great speeds
Now, these solar winds are now crashing into Earth’s atmosphere where Aurora Borealis occur or Northern Lights, releasing bright colors into the night sky caused by radiation.
This particular solar storm made auroras visible from latitudes as low as the Caribbean Sea and Madrid.
Auroras and geometric storms might also have a few other causes, for instance, CMEs (coronal mass ejections) and solar flares.
Meanwhile, in 2003, The Tihany Magnetic Observatory in Hungary once recorded a solar storm comparable to the Carrington Event. Every hour, the data from four different sources is averaged-the observatories are in Hermanus (South Africa), Kakioka (Japan), Honolulu (Hawaii, United States), and San Juan (Puerto Rico), according to the source. The phenomenon is expected to generate stronger solar winds that would ultimately reach Earth and generate geomagnetic storms.
While coronal holes have small effect for humans – save for paving the way for enthralling aurora to look at – the ensuing solar storms can have an adverse effect on animals that employ magnetic fields for traveling.
Another large solar storm known as the Halloween Solar Storm took place between October and November in 2003.
“One of the conclusions is that the indices commonly used by scientists -such as Dst or SYM-H, which are based on an overall perspective of the Earth and obtained by calculating averages, – failed to detect such an important event, and they most likely would have failed to detect the Carrington Event as well”, said Consuelo Cid, the lead author. Astronomers from the University of Alcalá explained that the current indices used by scientists to assess solar storms may have had resulted to miscalculations. These scientists failed to see that the combination of these two would result in the disappearance of the true magnetic disturbance.
In fact, her team has developed the Local Disturbance index for Spain (LDiñ) which calculates the geomagnetic perturbation in Spanish territory.
Cid added that a similar index may be applied in neighboring countries such as France, Italy and Portugal, and that adjusted indices could even be developed for individual regions worldwide. Her team collaborated with Red Eléctrica Española, Spain’s national power grid company, on the project.
