Hillary Clinton v the US Jeremy Corbyn, Bernie Sanders
A few of the toughest questions facing the country were never put to the candidates in the first Democratic presidential debate, prompting activists for hot-button issues such as illegal immigration and abortion to declare CNN the biggest loser out of Tuesday night. Frontrunner Hillary Clinton reasserted herself as the dominant force in the race.
The other three Democratic candidates had net scores in negative territory, with former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley at -6, former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee at -21 and former Sen.
Mr Sanders replied: “We can raise our voices but I come from a rural state and the views on gun control are different in rural states than they are in urban states whether we like it or not”. The overwhelming majority of poor people don’t participate. This morning he will deliver opening remarks at a roundtable discussion for Domestic Violence Awareness Month and he hosts a lunch with South Korean President Park Geun-hye at the Naval Observatory.
Sanders was the candidate of the moment on Facebook and Twitter when the debate focused on the controversy over Clinton’s decision to store emails on personal computers.
Similarly, many Democrats have avoided the gun issue for years because the politics were not on their side: The Senate in 2013 failed to pass a modest bill to close the private seller background check loophole that was backed by Sanders and about 90 percent of Americans but opposed by the NRA; gun control hasn’t been attempted since. This very smart son of Appalachia would make a great vice presidential candidate.
Brock was in Las Vegas promoting his latest book, “Killing the Messenger: The Right-Wing Plot to Derail Hillary and Hijack Your Government”, which he described as an attempt to anticipate and undermine the Republican Party’s “playbook” against Clinton’s campaign.
Instead, she leaned heavily on traditional financing events such as dinners where people must pay $2,700 to attend. Today she is also expected to receive the formal endorsement of Julian Castro. Marco Rubio is not in an early state, but the important general election state of Pennsylvania.
The committee leaders could, of course, still come down hard on Clinton.
Jim Webb, a highly decorated former Marine and former Secretary of the Navy was the only candidate on the dais to receive an A-rating from the NRA, an accolade he received during his 2006 Senate race.
Perhaps Bernie Sanders can make inroads by convincing her to become his running mate; or, predicting the nature of humble Bernie, to have her chosen in the Democratic convention at the top of the ticket. He even managed to profit from a Clinton problem while tacitly excusing her from it: “The American people”, he said, “are sick and exhausted of hearing about your damn emails!” “When we met in Copenhagen in 2009 and, literally, President Obama and I were hunting for the Chinese, going throughout this huge convention center, because we knew we had to get them to agree to something, because there will be no effective efforts against climate change unless China and India join with the rest of the world”, she recounted.
Of the likely Democratic voters surveyed who watched it, Clinton was declared the victor of Tuesday night’s debate, 54% to 24% for Sanders. “She’s got a whole record – she’s been there all along”. It was a very kind debate, very gentle. “She came out the victor”.
To be sure, Clinton remains a flawed candidate. Clinton asked the crowd at the outdoor Springs Preserve. If she wins the nomination and faces the Republican nominee, one thing is certain: The love fest will be over. “My husband understands that!”
But the memorable moment that may have stolen the show belonged to Bernie Sanders. Yet in a news release, CNN said the debate broke the previous Democratic debate record of 10.7 million viewers when Obama and Clinton squared off on ABC in 2008.
“On this stage you didn’t hear anyone denigrate women”, O’Malley said in his closing statement. During the commercial breaks, the 74-year-old Vermont senator continued to clap his hands to the music and seemed to be genuinely having a fun time on the bright set, according to ABC’s MARYALICE PARKS. Carly Fiorina and Jeb Bush have seen the biggest drops in their support since September.
