Free from Surat, Hardik Patel in Ahmedabad police net
On Friday, the Gujarat High Court reserved its verdict for Tuesday on a petition seeking to reverse sedition proceedings against Patel community leader Hardik Patel for his allegedly inflammatory remarks against the police.
On Friday evening, according to sources in Surat, the local police might require further remand for Hardik Patel. He is in Surat police custody at current in reference to the primary FIR of sedition filed there when he tried to instigate a Patel youth to kill policemen as an alternative of committing suicide. Patels never commit suicide, Hardik allegedly told Vipul Desai, who had announced that he would commit suicide in support of the agitation.
He was slapped with a sedition charge for this.
Arrested on Monday, October 19, on charges of sedition and conspiring to overthrow a lawfully elected government, 22-year-old Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel was remanded to police custody till Friday but when the Surat court rejected the state demand for further remand, the authority of the state manifested itself with the Ahmedabad crime branch police lying in wait and arresting him on the very same charge of sedition and moving him to Ahmedabad on a transfer warrant.

“Hardik and other accused persons, intentionally incited the sentiments of the community members and also developed a feeling of hatred, contempt and disaffection amongst the members of the Patel community towards the government and also other communities, thereby creating situations prejudicial to national integration”, it said. This was contested by his advocate B.M. Mangukia in the Gujarat High Court. However, its efforts came to nought when the Gujarat High Court struck down the ordinance, gave a rap on the knuckles of the SEC and directed the state government to hold the polls forthwith.
