Virginia students arrested in alleged school shooting plot
Yet another potentially tragic high school attack, a plot for shooting students and faculty, was prevented by fellow students who willingly alerted a School Resource Officer of warning signs posted on social media by one of the suspects. The students, aged 15 and 17, are now under detention at a juvenile confinement center where they face charges of conspiracy to commit murder.
“Authorities were tipped to the plan by social media messages”.
Two juveniles plotting acts of violence against students and staff at Riverbend High School in Fredericksburg, Va. have been arrested, Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said.
On Monday (10/12/15) an SRO arrested a juvenile male student at Riverbend High School, following information developed by the Deputy regarding the student’s intentions to commit acts of violence against “others” in the school.
Harris credited a program that assigns deputies to the county schools to interact with students and staff with thwarting the alleged planned attack, according to the Associated Press.
Police said that’s what led investigators to the second teen, who was arrested on Friday.
The two students are being detained at Rappahannock Regional Juvenile Detention Center.
The plot’s timing was not revealed but police said there was no immediate threat.
“This case was a prime example of how the coordination of law enforcement, Commonwealth Attorney’s and school administration worked together to stop an incident like this from occurring”, Sheriff Harris said.
Officials don’t believe anyone else was involved the plan.
