Four-yr-old girl killed in U.S. road rage shooting
Eden said the officer, who had a body-worn camera, had been in the police force for eight years and was shot during what appeared to be a routine traffic stop.
Lilly’s father was trying to exit the city’s main east-west freeway when another auto forced his vehicle out of the lane, her dad told police. A $25,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect, who was said to be driving a newer dark red or maroon Toyota Corolla or Camry with University of New Mexico license plates.
Todd Farkas, a public defender assigned to the case, declined to comment but said he planned to release a statement on Friday.
Garduno is organizing a vigil Saturday in honor of the girl.
It also is not the first time Torrez has been involved in a road rage incident, the Journal reports. Lilly’s father then threw up his hands and called him a name. Torrez hung his head through much of the hearing and only replied “no sir” when Schultz asked if he had any questions. Police said they believe it was a random encounter and that the two didn’t know each other. A GoFundMe account for funeral services and other expenses has received more than $76,000, and the hashtag #JusticeForLilly spread on social media.
He confessed to the murder of little Lilly Garcia, police Chief Gorden Eden said. “She was very bright and very smart”.
The father then pulled the pickup over to the side of the highway and desperately tried to save his daughter’s life, as passersby called 911.
No, sir. Reporter: Those are the only two words uttered by the accused killer of 4-year-old Lilly Garcia, but the judge had plenty to say to Tony Torrez.
The only crime for which he’s been prosecuted was a misdemeanor speeding violation in 2013.
Around that time, charges including abandonment or abuse of a child and aggravated battery of a household member were dismissed after the victim died.
The 32-year-old Torrez was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder and other crimes in the shooting death of Lilly Garcia. The complaint filed in U.S. District Court by a federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officer cited Lymon’s previous felony convictions in New Mexico state courts.
Jose Garcia told The Associated Press outside the family’s home on Thursday that this type of tragedy should never happen. Garcia hit his brakes and said a fourth shot was sacked before Torrez sped away.
The arrest was announced several hours after the shooting occurred around 7:45 p.m.by a Walgreen’s in the eastern part of the city near Interstate 40. Torrez was arrested Wednesday, October 21, 2015 and acknowledged shooting 4-year-old Lilly Garcia while she was riding in the backseat of her fathers pickup truck with her 7-year-old brother a day earlier, police said.
