Tesla can weather Consumer Reports’ snub, analysts say

Tesla replaced the entire drive system. It seems that the tech may not be as beneficial at all.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently spoke about the fact that the company is looking to start building cars in China, significantly cutting on import fees and shipping costs for Chinese customers. “The software is very new”. Rather, it’s at level two (out of four) on the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s scale of self-driving cars.

Meanwhile, other automakers such as General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Honda Motor (NYSE:HMC) struggled with in-car entertainment systems and other new technologies, while Fiat Chrysler (NYSE:FCAU) brands continued to hold near the bottom. Affected cars include the VW Golf, Jetta and the Audi A3.

Tesla owners who received a recent software update have posted videos online showing their Model S cars swerving into oncoming traffic while in “autopilot” mode. But the result of their survey had to give in to the truth about the performance of the Model S when consumers use it for their everyday use.

Karesh suspects that Consumer Reports has seen a recent increase in complaints because of how it conducts its research: asking owners to report problems that they consider serious. Travel time may be shorter, but the experience of driving may be missed.

Just weeks after Consumer Reports showered praise on Tesla giving the Model S a ideal score, the website has unceremoniously pulled the rug out from under them.
