English football is ready to welcome gay players, according to campaigners
If the players do eventually reveal themselves, then this could mark a landmark moment in British football history – as they will become the openly homosexual footballers in the Premier League era.
Two football stars who play in Premier League have made a decision to come out publicly as gay before the start of next season, according to Sunday Mirror. And so what if he is?
That was after former Leeds United and United States player Robbie Rogers did so in 2013.
Shaw replied: “Its not me”.
Shaw is now recovering from a broken leg and is expected to be out until March. “Speedy Recover pal # MUFC”.
The footballer took to Twitter to deny rumours that he was due to become one of the first openly gay players playing for a top English club since Justin Fashanu in 1990.
The Mirror also report that a well-known player told friends he was gay in 2011 but his vehicle was them daubed with a homophobic slur.
Lord Ousely, the chairman of anti-discrimination watchdog Kick it Out, said that it would make sense for the two to declare their sexuality at the same time, as it would avoid the pressure of being “the first” openly gay footballer.
But with attitudes finally changing the two Premier League stars believe the time is right to come out.
“It has always been such a macho game and, unfortunately, perhaps more than in any other sport, there can be an aggressive mob mentality in the stands”, the source said.
“While we’ve seen increasing numbers of high profile LGBT sports people in other sports, football has significantly lagged behind, and we hope that if these players do decide to be open about their sexual orientation, this will lead to more people – including players at all levels and fans – feeling comfortable to do the same”.
