Drogba Scores a Brace in 90 Seconds Because, Well, He’s Didier Drogba
Toronto came close again just before the half hour mark when Jozy Altidore dropped the ball back to Giovinco, who unleashed a shot from the top of the box that went just inches wide of the net.
The Montreal Impact and Toronto FC are two clubs that don’t like each other and with so much at stake, it will be no exception.
The victor of that game advances to the semifinals.
“I’m a Montreal native and there has always been big games against Toronto over the years”.
Montreal has already qualified for the playoffs, but a finish between third and sixth place only guarantees them one game – and for the teams finishing in fifth and sixth place that game will be played on the road.
There are many combinations, but if Montreal and TFC tie and stay where they are in the standings, they would meet again in the knockout game in Toronto.
A subplot this week came from TFC coach Greg Vanney, who faced Drogba in the early 2000s while playing for Bastia in the French league. “The two teams have felt each other out”.
“It’s important that we approach this game in the most serious of manners”, said Biello, back home after four straight road games.
No team in the MLS has a winning record away from home this season. Montreal keeper Evan Bush shot up his right hand to tip a Robbie Findley header over the bar in the 31st minute, just after Sebastian Gionvinco shot just wide from the edge of the penalty area.
Mauro Biello took over as head coach in mid-season.
Montreal Impact forward Didier Drogba scored two backheel goals in two minutes.. In addition to setting up Altidore’s goal, the Atomic Ant kept the Impact back line on their toes all game and set up a number of quality chances for his teammates.
Unfortunately Drogba went down with an injury later in the half. Off a corner kick less than a minute later, he redirected Marco Donadel’s low pass inside the far post.
“I think they’re in for a surprise”, said Impact fullback Donny Toia.
The Impact then took the lead one minute later on nearly a photo replica of their first goal, as Drogba took advantage of a ball watching Reds defense to put the ball past a helpless Chris Konopka.
Moments later, Piatti hit the crossbar, but Toronto’s Michael Bradley did the same with the equalizer on his boot in the 74th.
