Family says Corey Jones was not violent

One day after Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw announced he would be enlisting the help of the FBI, investigators with the agency spent all day and night at the site where Corey Jones was fatally shot by Palm Beach Gardens undercover police officer Nouman Raja. He rode up on him in an unmarked white van with tinted windows. He pulled up to Jones’s vehicle, thinking it was abandoned. Gardens police say Raja, who wore jeans and a t-shirt, was “suddenly confronted by an armed subject”. Prosecutors confirmed that Jones never fired his weapon at Raja. Three of the bullets that left Raja’s gun hit the church musician. Crump said Jones had a concealed carry permit.

About 3:15 a.m., police said, Raja stopped his unmarked van near Jones’s SUV “to investigate what he believed to be an abandoned vehicle”. The box and the paperwork were still in Jones’s vehicle the next weekend when the band played at a Jupiter bar called Johnny Mangos.

Minutes later, Jones, 31, was dead. It’s unclear whether Jones knew Raja was an officer. A police officer hasn’t been charged with a crime in the county for shooting someone in the line of duty since the early 1990s. That law has been successfully invoked in Palm Beach County by a man who shot and killed two young men outside a keg party. In light of the fact that the Sheriff’s Office is also dealing with its own deputy-involved shootings, The LP Palm Beach questions if one local law-enforcement agency can adequately and impartially investigate another.

The New York Times reports that the officer failed to disclose his reprimand on his application for the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department, whose officials were swayed by his “exceptional experience” with the Atlantis Police Department. Raja was hired at a slightly higher rate of pay than other new officers because he was a firearms instructor and fluent in five languages, according to his personnel records with the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department. Raja has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation plays out.

“That was his last night driving home when he broke down that he wasn’t alone”, said Simeonove. “Someone told us about it so my husband and I came”.

Prominent civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump is representing Jones’ family.

In a statement, Bradshaw said he requested federal help “in an effort to provide the family of Corey Jones and the community with a thorough and accurate investigation”. “We still need policemen”, she said. “We’re hoping they’re going to be truthful and bring Corey’s name to rest”.
