DeMarco Murray on Eagles: ‘We’re increasingly just getting better’
Both teams came into the game playing for first place in the division. “We’ve got 11. Cowboys defense”, Hardy said. “We just kept working at it, and we eventually got on a nice roll”, Murray said.
“Now we have to build on this win and keep playing the way we’re capable of playing”.
“He’s getting more familiar in terms of what we’re doing, but we can’t continue to do that against really good football teams”, Kelly said. Manning was busted for a couple of intentional grounding calls-two of the 12 penalties incurred by the Giants on the night-and he could never find a rhythm.
“That was just a awful read by me”, Manning said of Carroll’s interception.
Bradford has nine interceptions to go with his nine touchdowns on the season.
Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com offers a deeper breakdown of what Marinelli can expect from a defensive front that’s just now coming together as we approach midseason.
The Giants got a boost when they found out before the game that Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. would be active. Beckham, who missed practice all week due to a sore hamstring, caught seven passes for 61 yards and scored New York’s only touchdown on a 13-yard reception. However, he didn’t have a single reception in the second half. Four plays later, Bradford hit Riley Cooper for a 32-yard TD that tied the game.
He threw three more interceptions – including yet another in the Red Zone – and each time you wondered, “What the hell was he thinking?” Suddenly, DeMarco Murray, who was caught wondering earlier about why he was so infrequently used, is showing a few bounce, averaging about five yards a carry Monday, scoring a touchdown. The Eagles were off to a typical slow start but the defense took control and got the ball back on the Giants’ second possession of the game. Instead of getting the ball back with good field position, the Giants were back on defense.
DeMarco Murray, who’d spent a large chunk of the first half shaking his head while pacing the sideline away from the rest of his offensive teammates, ripped his skullcap off the peg that was holding it behind the bench and dropped his helmet down on it in frustration.
The Eagles’ defense held back the Giants in the fourth quarter, and Caleb Sturgis kicked a 39-yard field goal to make it 27-7 with 8:19 left in the game. The Giants had their special run package in the game, too, which was even more alarming.
“That’s bad football”, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. Bradford was sacked only once, and for most of the night, he was able to stand tall in the pocket and deliver his passes. Into his third season, Kelly is 4-1 against the Giants … At the end of the day, we’re just taking it one game at a time and we know we’ve got a long, long way to go.
Not for lost, the Eagles didn’t play their best game either, except Fletcher Cox, even though they won by a large margin (20 points).
They began with precisely the same results in 2014 only to endure a blowout loss to the Eagles that started a lengthy skid.
Two snaps later, on third-and-2, Bradford’s pass to Matthews fell incomplete, but it wouldn’t have mattered, since Josh Huff lined up incorrectly, covering up the tight end without making sure he was on the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped.
So those who thought Philadelphia did enough with its non-QB splashy offseason moves to win the East can still feel confident. Now, after Monday night’s performance, it’s hard to question anything in Philadelphia.
