Roberto Martinez to talk to Gerard Deulofeu after Arsenal incident
Everton boss Roberto Martinez is anxiously waiting to discover the extent of the knee injury suffered by Phil Jagielka at Arsenal on Saturday.
Jagielka has been outstanding for Everton this season, helping several young players settle into a defence disrupted by injury, and was named England captain for the recent European Championship qualifier against Lithuania.
Martinez said: “We had really good news yesterday”.
“But we’ve had the scan and the medial ligament is affected and it’s an injury which is quite straight forward but there’s no other damage in the knee”.
“It is the least that it could be”.
Everton host Norwich City midweek in the Capital One Cup before returning to home team duties when they face Sam Allardyce’s Sunderland on November 1st at Goodison Park. A few of the structure is going to be damaged, but we don’t know what it is yet. “I wouldn’t expect anything longer than eight to nine weeks”.
The Everton manager added: “He will be a huge miss”.
“Gerard is a young man who has come into a very different game and he needs to understand the culture of the British game, but I love to see players who care and want to make things happen”.
“Maybe he has to learn that, but it is hard as a striker or an attacking player to cope with the amount of bad treatment you get from defenders”.
Deulofeu has been solid in the past few matches, picking up three assists in his last four matches including his only three starts of the season. Martinez said: “With Tim’s high standards he is not going to be happy with the way we conceded those goals”.
“But he’s one of our most experienced senior figures and doesn’t need any protection”.
