New York Jets pull away for 24-20 win over Washington Redskins
I understand we can go with a quarterback and move forward.
Even if Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden senses his team’s season is on the verge of spiraling out of control, he is not giving any thought to replacing Kirk Cousins as his starting quarterback.
Washington ended the first half with a three point advantage over New York, but it didn’t take long for them to give away that lead.
“If you want to be a great team”, wide receiver Brandon Marshall said, “you’ve got to be able to punch through adversity”.
After a Washington three-and-out, Fitzpatrick unleashed a wobbly pass toward Marshall, who snagged it just above the turf and ran it for a 35-yard score.
Breeland recovered his second fumble after stripping the ball from Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall, and Washington took over possession at midfield with about five minutes left in the half.
“It’s huge for us to get the run established to keep guys in the box and get more one-on-one matchups… we didn’t do it so much in the first half, but once the second half rolled around, I thought we executed a lot better”.
The Bucs can basically forget about winning the division at this point, though – unless they win something like 10 of their final 11 games, which seems exceedingly unlikely.
“The second half, we laid an egg”, Gruden said.
Today’s loss to the Jets marks the fourth time this season that Cousins has thrown two interceptions in a contest.
Of the Washington Redskins’ top four cornerbacks entering training camp, Bashaud Breeland was the only one to play the last two weeks. “I mean, you can look at the results and say, ‘Okay, too many picks.’ But every interception has its own reason and its own explanation, so they’re all different”. There were a lot of things going on pre-snap that he’s got to deal with, getting the formations, the protections and all that….
There were also two short touchdowns for Mark Ingram, as the Saints put on arguably their best display of the season so far. “Kirk’s not at this stage in his career right now – nor is anyone on our roster – to carry the team throwing the ball as much as we would have had to today”.
The Redskins will play the Buccaneers next Sunday at home. Tight end Jordan Reed, center Kory Lichtensteiger and backup running back Matt Jones were also out.
The turnovers continue, but the Washington Redskins are standing by their man. Despite another disappointing performance, quarterback Kirk Cousins will continue to start.
Breeland forced another turnover just before the half, picking off Fitzpatrick that led to another Forbath field goal as the Redskins would lead 13-10 at the break.
“He’s deceivingly fast”, a smiling Decker said of Fitzpatrick. After he caught a 4-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, Garcon was not targeted at all after halftime.
New York got the ball right back when Marcus Gilchrist picked off Cousins’ deep pass for Jamison Crowder.
