Archery World Cup: Abhishek Verma Wins Silver
Indian archer Abhishek Verma 24 October 2015 created history by winning a silver medal in the Archery World Cup Final medal in the compound section held in Mexico City.
This was Deepika’s fourth World Cup Final silver after being runner-up at Istanbul 2011, Tokyo 2012 and Paris 2013, an unparalleled achievement in consistency on the circuit.
Making a comeback after one-year, sixth seeded Deepika defeated Korean third seed Kawanaka Kaori 6-4 in the quarters to open her campaign in the showpiece event.
The Mexican Cardoso had, in the quarterfinals, upset the top seed Mike Schloesser but the Wroclaw World Cup champion Verma was supremely strong in the semifinals as he had five flawless ends to cap the maximum, including six shots closest to the centre en route to a 150-142 win. The lead kept switching at the end of each round. Elmaagcli benefited from a wild eight from Verma in the second set which saw him edge past the Indian to 57-56, before the later rallied to shoot a spotless 30. At the end, two consecutive ideal scores from the Turkish took the game and the gold medal away from the Indian’s reach.
The Archery World Cup Final is held in the form of a tournament in which archers ranking first to seventh and an archer from the host country compete.
“You never know when ideal score is going to happen”. “It’s something that doesn’t seem to happen to me”. “It’s been a great experience”, Abhishek said.
