Dan Patrick to hold presser with Ted Cruz at presidential campaign headquarters
The campaign also announced the endorsement of Texas Railroad Commissioner David Porter, who will serve as co-chair of the Cruz operation in Texas with Patrick, as well as six major financial supporters that once backed former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who dropped out of the presidential race in September. As for Ted Cruz, the Texas senator was asked about his interest during a Friday talk with C-SPAN, where he said he’d totally be up to host an episode.
“It is a tremendous honor for me that Dan has accepted the Texas Chairmanship of my campaign”, Cruz said. “No other campaign has that”.
Patrick’s backing of Cruz gives the Texas senator a powerful surrogate in a delegate-rich state where Republican primary voters go to the polls on March 1. Super PAC officials – who are not permitted to coordinate with the campaign 36053388- did not respond to requests for comment over the weekend about the size of any donations, or whether the biggest donors would be given their own, personalized super PAC, as Deason, Warren and the three biggest Cruz donors have enjoyed previously.
Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign often lambasts the “Washington cartel”, but he has begun touting that he can fundraise with the best of the D.C. insiders he wants to defeat.
Cruz’s super PAC has been reluctant to spend much of its money so far, emptying very little of its coffers as of this summer. Those groups can take unlimited amounts from donors, while the campaigns themselves cannot accept contribution checks from each donor of more than $2,700 per election.
Bush and Cruz have both shown they can land big contribution checks.
Those kinds of givers are especially valuable because they can provide a constant stream of cash without taking up the candidate’s time attending traditional fundraising events.
Cruz has had strong support in Texas, but is not dominating the race in the state.
