Don Mattingly leading candidate for Marlins job, report says
Mattingly, 54, was passed over by the Yankees in 2008 when searching for a new manager when Joe Torre left.
Don Mattingly could very likely be the next Marlins manager. Jennings was reportedly asked to return to his original role as the team’s general manager, but a conflicting report stated that Jennings’s role with the Marlins was still uncertain.
Mattingly and the Los Angeles Dodgers parted ways after the team was eliminated from the playoffs by the eventual National League champion New York Mets.
Just one day after Heyman mentioned the Marlins’ interest in hiring Mattingly, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that the interest is mutual.
Owner Jeffrey Loria’s first choice for weeks has been Mattingly, people familiar with the situation say, and now that Mattingly is available following his departure from the Dodgers, that hasn’t changed. The Marlins had interviewed at least Larry Bowa, Bo Porter and Manny Acta. But the search may take a complete turn with the sudden availability of Mattingly.
According to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports, the Marlins consider him a “leading candidate for managerial job”.
Over five seasons with the Dodgers, Mattingly compiled a record of 446-363. He helped the team to three consecutive NL West titles (2013-2015), which was the first time that was achieved in franchise history. The payroll will be much lower, there will be fewer star players and the winning likely won’t be as frequent unless he can quickly turn the ship around.
