North Carolina Tar Heels vs Virginia Cavaliers Preview
UNC was favored to win this one.
The Tar Heels had their best scoring chances of the first half about 30 minutes into the game, with a flurry of activity in front of the Irish net on a counter attack. Virginia (2-5, 1-2 ACC) was giving the home team something to think about.
Paige and Johnson, who have both played prominent roles since they were freshmen, are two reasons why UNC will likely enter the season ranked among the top five and why the Tar Heels will warrant a few consideration for the preseason No. 1 ranking.
As the contest wore on and Virginia continued to hang around there came a point where UNC needed to step up and make plays to seize control of the game.
The two turnovers came courtesy of an interception, the Hoos’ first of the season, and a fumble.
“It was four plays today, that he wrote on the board”, Tar Heels senior linebacker Jeff Schoettmer said after UNC’s 26-13 victory on Saturday at Kenan Stadium. Elijah Hood carried 21 times for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Williams added 71 yards on 12 carries.
UNC’s players ended last season wanting to forget those performances. That hasn’t been the case. The Tar Heels, the nation’s only unranked one-loss team from a power conference, hope to join that group when the new poll is released Sunday. From an offensive standpoint, UNC has not forced teams to play from behind out of the gate. The offense has been slow to get rolling and while the Tar Heels’ ability to put up points in droves has mitigated the early droughts, relying on that may prove foolhardy against better defensive team.
He was describing how the defense adjusts at halftime, but he could have been speaking about a lot of things. “We had a seven-point lead in the second half”.
Williams went on to list all the questions surrounding this team: Will Kennedy Meeks, the junior forward, take advantage of his improved physique and become more consistent?
“I know he wants to play well and he wants to be a part of the game plan and things that allows him to perform, and you know, just as I said, just leave it on the field”.
All that being said, Hood did man’s work on Saturday.
N.C. State 35, Wake Forest 17: Matt Dayes scored on two long runs to lead a dominating first quarter as North Carolina State beat Wake Forest, ending the Wolfpack’s road skid in the instate series. Prior to that it was Gio Bernard doing it on multiple occasions in 2012.
North Carolina helped to contribute to Virginia’s ability to keep moving the chains throughout the game, taking 13 penalties and conceding 135 total yards as a result. On that drive, Hood had five carries for 31 yards.
