Miami cans Golden after lopsided loss
It’s been less than 24 hours since Al Golden was sacked at Miami, but already a few unexpected people are trying to throw their names into the coaching ring.
In a move that long seemed inevitable, Golden was sacked Sunday with more than four full years left on his contract.
“On behalf of my family I want to thank the University of Miami for a tremendous opportunity”, Golden said in a statement. “However, in this instance, all of our interests are best served by moving forward and looking ahead, not behind”. During the course of his career as head coach of Miami, dating back to the 2011 season, Golden amassed a 32-25 overall and 17-18 ACC record.
Clemson impressed voters with its 58-0 drubbing of Miami. James’ sacking of the head coach may have been the strongest defensive play the Miami Hurricanes faithful has seen this season.
The Hurricanes are scheduled to resume practice today and have a game at Duke on Saturday. He met with his team for a final time Sunday evening.
However, Miami has several potential candidates they could consider, mostly with ties to the program.
Golden was hired in December 2010 and before he coached his first game had to deal with the massive mess created by the revelations of rampant rule-breaking by a former booster who is now in federal prison for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme. “They did most of the talking and we just played the whole time”. He made plays throughout the field because he studied more film than other players. Golden will simply be moving.
The south Florida area of the state has always been a hot bed of talent and has been a well of sorts for the three major universities since the early 1980s. And he didn’t go on to success in the National Football League like so many of his teammates, but he’s clearly now one of the most successful and beloved Hurricane alums of all time.
Elliott said the Tigers enjoyed the rout this weekend, but were snapped back into the task at hand with the Wolfpack by coach Dabo Swinney and the coaching staff.
Golden was hired in December 2010.
Since the game was the season’s last for Mississippi Delta, returning players will sit out next year’s first two games, with returning East Mississippi players out of the season opener.
Miami is still dealing with the after effects of that scandal.
Furthermore, Miami had six players drafted by the National Football League last spring-including five in the first three rounds-yet all they had to show for it was a 6-7 mark. He followed that up with the 9th best in 2012, the 20th in 2013, the 12th in 2014, and the 26th best this past season. While the Hurricanes didn’t make it any easier for themselves, they still face five Coastal Division foes to close out the season.
