The risk doesn’t stop there though – women who drink heavily, and do get breast cancer, are at a “higher risk of the breast cancer coming back”.
She highlighted the symptoms of breast cancer and the risk factors that increase the possibility of being affected by the disease, and the screening tests women should perform.
To make matters worse, she learned her breast cancer was multi-focal, meaning the MRI detected several cancerous lumps.
Although a number of health care professionals have recently begun saying that women can wait until 45 to begin mammograms, Egger still recommended checking with one’s doctor as early as 40.
“For most women who have mastectomies, their insurance, if it covers a bra, will only cover one bra, which is [not enough]”, said Women’s Center Operations Coordinator Katie Byrd. Breast cancer patient groups say that a woman should update her physician at each appointment with information about diagnoses in her family and other relevant information – even if the doctor doesn’t ask.
Institute spokesman Justin Harvey says the survival rate for women under 40 is lower than it is among older women.
The colour is associated with Pinktober, the breast cancer awareness month celebrated in October across the world.
The report found women had a better chance of beating the disease now than 20 years ago.
Jacquie was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, and had an operation then, along with radiotherapy and five years, worth of drugs, but the disease has made an unwelcome return.
Megan Morrow, a junior at UT Martin, said she came out her freshman year to support the walkers, lining the streets with her fraternity members. “If I’d listened to them, I wouldn’t be here talking to you”.
Cassandra Boyle was 34 when she was diagnosed.
“When I was able to say, “Hey, it’s only stage one” to my husband, to my kids and, ‘Don’t worry, it’s gonna be fine”. It’s all about early detection with this type of cancer with young people. “If you don’t, it’s just going to be too late”.
