Ole Miss takes down racist trash flag
The University of Mississippi student senate adopted a resolution Tuesday asking administrators to remove the flag from campus.
“Historically, the term “Ole Miss” is a term that slaves used to refer to the mistresses and-or matriarchs of their plantations”, one student told Democracy Now, ahead of the student government vote last week.
Freeze said at the Southeastern Conference football media days in July that the Confederate battle emblem on the flag should be removed.
The UM ASB was not the only entity on campus that was calling for the removal of the flag, as faculty members and students alike supported the idea as well.
A week after University of Mississippi student leaders voted overwhelmingly to remove the state flag from campus, it was taken down during a ceremony on Monday, according to CNN.
It remains to be seen how Ole Miss’ removal of the flag will affect ongoing efforts in the state to ban the flag altogether. I believe publicly funded institutions should respect the law as it is written today.
“I think the overall mood has changed”, Bruce says.
Stocks, in the university’s statement, noted the decision to no longer fly the state flag was not easy.
The University of Mississippi’s press office did not return Mic’s request for comment.
Despite the heated debate and continuous dispute about the Confederate emblem on the state flag, there are still supporters who stand firm to their views that the flag is a strong manifestation of the state’s history and heritage.
Initiative Measure No. 55 proposes to add the following language to the Mississippi Constitution: “The flag of the State of Mississippi shall not contain or include any reference to the Confederate army’s battle flag or to the Confederacy”.
The symbol has become a point of heightened controversy since June’s South Carolina church shootings by an avowed white supremacist.
The City Council in the state capital, Jackson, which hasn’t flown the state flag on city property in more than a decade, voted in July to urge the state to create a new flag, CNN affiliate WAPT reported. The white man charged in the slayings had posed with a Confederate battle flag in photos posted online before the massacre. “It clearly states ‘The state flag shall receive all the respect and ceremonious etiquette given the American flag,”‘ Bryant said in a statement. “We need to begin having conversations about changing Mississippi’s flag”.
