VW halts sale in Europe of new cars linked to emissions scandal

Volkswagen said Wednesday it had completely halted the sale of vehicles in the European Union which came equipped with software thwarting diesel-engine emission tests. It suggests that this was a sustained effort with a significant team, since VW had to repeatedly modify software and make sure that the devices fooled inspections across the globe.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the cars with 2-Liter four-cylinder diesel engines can still be driven, even though they can spew ozone-causing nitrogen oxide at 10 to 40 times the legal limits. From around 2012, it introduced a more sophisticated and expensive system called Selective Catalytic Reduction. Volkswagen’s main French office in Villers-Cotterets, northeast of Paris, and another VW office at Roissy, near Paris’ main airport, were searched and computer material seized, an official at the Prosecutor’s office said.
A Volkswagen spokesman confirmed the company had been searched by French police on Friday and was cooperating with the authorities, declining to comment further.
According to a poll of 1,000 Germans by consultants Prophet, 65 pc believes that VW continues to build excellent cars. Car-buying website TrueCar has also pointed out the searches for VE diesel cars recessed by 57 percent since the scandal started last month. Many also apparently view the scandal as a passing squall, with 63 percent of respondents saying they believe the issue will soon disappear.
