Likely New Philadelphia Phillies GM Matt Klentak Should Succeed Because of
Multiple reports and subsequently “sourced confirmations” say the Phillies will name Matt Klentak as their new general manager.
Klentak comes over after serving as the assistant GM for the Dodgers. When the GM job opened up and they gave it to Billy Eppler, Klentak probably said something like “go F yourself”, even if it was only to his wife at the dinner table. Klentak previously worked under MacPhail when MacPhail was president of baseball operations with the Baltimore Orioles.
There should be more high-upside talent on the way, led by shortstop J.P. Crawford, and a front office led by MacPhail and Klentak that can shape the roster in its image with the winter meetings approaching in December.
That has got to be good news for the Phillies and their fans, giving them a guy who will roll up the sleeves and get to work.
A new era of Phillies baseball has arrived, with many reasons to be optimistic despite a 63-99 record in 2015.
Gillick, who remains with the club as a front-office advisor, recently told CSNPhilly.com he was pleased with a few of the early strides the club has made in the rebuild but warned that it will be another “two or three years before the team is ready to contend”. That man is Matt Klentak. The Angels’ other assistant GM, Scott Servais, who also spent four years with that team, was just named manager of the Mariners Friday.
Klentak played college baseball at Dartmouth and graduated with an economics degree in 2002.
