Jon Stewart is Opening an Animal Sanctuary
“Our family’s code is to live according to the golden rule: we do unto others as we would have them do unto us.” .
The Stewarts’ deep dive into animal activism coincides with a new study in The Lancet that asserts that processed meats like bacon and hot dogs – cause cancer.
Susie Coston, Farm Sanctuary’s director, took us on a tour of the grounds in Watkins Glen.
Both Stewart and his wife were reportedly in New York City this past weekend – after famously moving across the Hudson River back over to his native land of New Jersey – during a gala for Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization that focuses on animal rights. So, we wish Stewart all the best in his new life as a life saver, even if it was prompted in part by people in Washington being just the worst.
“Jon had to give me shots, and so to make me laugh he would dress up the animals”, she said.
While I look for books about animals (especially those containing farm animals) to have a strong animal rights message, I am hopeful that this book will- because of its mainstream media push, and Stewart’s way of gently weaving her arm through the readers, guiding them on a personal journey- inspire those to explore the issues contained further.
Stewart and his wife were honored at an all-Vegan benefit Saturday night at New York City’s famed Plaza Hotel.
The Stewarts are planning to eventually open the doors of their farm to the public by appointment. She moves on to educating about evils of wool and horse-drawn carriages, saying, “Like the animals in circuses and in many zoos, these animals have become the means to an end for human profit”. “This was my dream man. But I also knew that because he loved animals, if those animals didn’t like me, that might really count against me”.
Started in 1986, Farm Sanctuary now operates three shelters: one in upstate New York and two in California.
There are animals that were blinded, thrown to the side of the road or left to die in piles of other dead animals.
He cracked, “I didn’t know you could find so many compassionate people to fill a room”.
“It doesn’t have to be going vegan”.
