New Liberal Government Elected in Canada
One thing is sure: the Canadian electorate seems as fickle as ever – one minute they want you, the next they are looking elsewhere.
“We beat fear with hope”, Trudeau said.
Mrs. Simpson Miller expressed best wishes to the Prime Minister-Elect and the 184 Members of Parliament representing his party and noted the large number of women candidates elected to office during the election. Incumbent Prime Minister Stephen Harper practiced a rough, American-style wedge politics, yet long benefited from an oil-and-gas boom that made Canada a safe haven during a global crisis. While the scope of the Liberal victory clearly shows that new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was, in fact, ready, what the results really show is that it was the Canadian people who were ready – for change.
A Conservative mailer was sent out claiming “Trudeau’s agenda would make it easier for kids to get and smoke marijuana”, but it hasn’t stopped him and the Liberals scoring a landslide victory.
More than 17 million Canadians cast a ballot in the country’s 42nd federal election, making for Canada’s highest voter turnout since 1993.
Pierre Trudeau, who was prime minister until 1984 with a short interruption, remains one of the few Canadian politicians known in America, his charisma often drawing comparisons to John F Kennedy.
AT A TIME when populists and other political outsiders are spooking political establishments in the United States and other Western countries, Canada’s election this week was something of an outlier.
They have pledged to slash taxes for the middle class while raising them for the wealthiest Canadians, as well as rolling out an infrastructure plan that will put the country into three consecutive deficit budgets.
On the campaign trail, Trudeau also floated the idea that his administration may consider bolstering local forces in the region, and increasing Canada’s humanitarian aid.
Despite his grandiose beginnings, Justin Trudeau projects a more casual persona than his glamorous father, who dated movie stars such as Barbra Streisand, married, had children and divorced while serving as prime minister between 1968 and 1984, with a brief interruption. Modi wrote that India-Canada partnership was blessed with enormous potential for mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation across a wide range of areas and could help shape a more peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.
