New Supergirl Promo Looks Ahead To The Rest Of This Season
Check out the report below for a look at the new show, and just why the bosses at CBS are not anxious about going up against Gotham. Viewers will see flashbacks of Kara’s mother, Alura, played by Laura Benanti. But we first met a bespectacled Kara (Melissa Benoist) before she ever made a decision to become Supergirl and therefore before she needed to create a different look to protect her secret identity.
With Supergirl, Greg Berlanti and his Arrow and The Flash producing team are attempting to mount a modern, youth-appeal superhero series not for the CW, but for older-skewing network CBS. Sound off in the comments section below. The show intentionally challenges the idea that only men can be heroes, and Kara even questions her potentially problematic name. But when Melissa stepped out wearing that outfit, it was like, ‘Oh, this is going to work.’ None of us had any doubts, from that point forward. Because her journey took a slight detour through the Phantom Zone, Superman arrived before her and obviously doesn’t need her protection. Will you be watching both Fox’s Gotham, and CBS’ Supergirl?
Here’s the deal with Supergirl: She was sent to Earth to watch over her cousin (aka Superman), but her ship got trapped in a time portal, delaying her arrival in the process.
Now, here is where the show veers off from the movie: Kara’s new co-worker is Jimmy “James” Olsen who Grant hired from The Daily Planet. Luckily, Benoist is overjoyed with the way her iconic, and cape-tastic costume came together. She does just that, but before she can take him prisoner, Lumberjack kills himself.
“She never knew about her powers”.
While preparing for her role, Benoist said that she did not read a lot of comics books, although she is familiar with a few. Of Benoist in the main role?
BENOIST: (As Kara Danvers) If we call her Supergirl, doesn’t that make us guilty of being anti-feminist?
“The reason that I was so drawn to it, from the beginning, was that I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity”. But she admits that she wouldn’t have it any other way, saying, “It’s a handsome story to tell in a sometimes scary world”.
According to USA Today, Supergirl will also explore the relationship between Melissa’s character, Kara, and Kara’s adoptive sister, Alex. After a plane her sister is loses engine control, Kara has no choice but to use her powers and save the plane.
ERIC DEGGANS, BYLINE: Kara Danvers has the same powers as her cousin, a certain superhero with a big red S on his chest who can leap tall buildings in a single bound.
While it is uncertain if Benoist will share the same fate (there are already wet blankets here and there as expected) but as per the aforementioned publication, the star already embodies the high spirits of Kara Zor-El, which is always a good start.
With the DC Comics series premiering tonight, CBS has just released a new Supergirl season one trailer that you can check out in the player below!
