OU’s Sanchez, OSU’s Peterson are Thorpe Award semifinalists
White has started six of LSU’s seven games at cornerback and has recorded 22 tackles, three pass breakups and one tackle for a 2-yard loss for the fourth-ranked and undefeated Tigers. The five interceptions are tied for the third-most in the NCAA.
Three former Sooners have won the Thorpe Award: Ricky Dixon (1987), Roy Williams (2001) and Derrick Strait (2003). The following year, Ramsey moved to the “star” nickel back position and collected several All-America accolades and All-ACC First Team honors.
The Thorpe Award goes to the nation’s top defensive back. Thorpe excelled at every sport in which he competed, including football at which he played on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
One other player from the Big 12, Kevin Peterson of Oklahoma State, is also a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award.
The Jim Thorpe Award finalists will be announced November. 23 or 24 and the victor at the College Football Awards show December. 10. Vonn Bell of Ohio State and Desmond King of Iowa were also named as semifinalists.
