Michigan woman sentenced for stuffing newborn son into plastic bag at work
Pappas’ defense attorney Raymond Cassar requested that Pappas receive mental health treatment during her prison sentence.
A 26-year-old woman on Monday expressed her indescribable pain and regret for the death of her newborn son whom she stuffed into a plastic bag after giving birth to him at her suburban Detroit workplace.
She earlier entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder, under an agreement with prosecutors.
Pappas, 26, was facing first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse and felony murder charges.
“I just want to say that I am sorry and I wish I had made the right choices that would have stopped all of this”, she said.
Police said the baby was found sealed in a plastic bag. She had given birth to the infant in the work restroom and then moved his body to her workspace. Paramedics who came to the scene to treat Pappas unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate the child.
Her father, James Pappas, said he and the rest of the family had “unconditional love” for her and will visit whenever they have the opportunity. The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office found that the newborn died by asphyxiation and ruled the death a homicide.
