Melissa Benoist joins Superman family as ‘Supergirl’ on CBS
What makes this one different? .
“Our collective gut is that she’s very much at the beginning of her journey”, executive producer Greg Berlanti said before the Supergirl series premiere. I like the old-school guys, like Batman. But that makes all the difference.
There’s so much fun stuff going on in “Supergirl“, from cameos by Dean Cain (“Lois & Clark”) and Helen Slater (1984’s “Supergirl“), as Kara’s adoptive parents, to the introduction of a sizzling hot James “Don’t Call Me Jimmy” Olsen (Mehcad Brooks, “Necessary Roughness”), that it seems churlish to complain about a subplot that threatens to spoil the fun by making a federal issue out of Supergirl. Yet, there are a few redeeming, clever touches, primarily whenever Kara (Melissa Benoist) has a scene with Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), her obnoxious media-mogul boss. “I think on the scale of superhero garb, I have it pretty easy”. It’s safe to say you may have that same feeling when you see it on the show.
And of course, you can’t be a superhero without a super suit! At work, she’s friends with Winslow “Winn” Schott (Jeremy Jordan), a technology expert who also has a huge, unrequited crush on her. In this story a Y chromosome is basically Kryptonite. Then there is the whole sister dynamic between Kara and Alex, who just happens to work for the DEO, the Department of Extra-Normal Operations, which is sort of like the Central Intelligence Agency for alien stuff. The shift adds lots of emotional layers and new levels to the storytelling. Eventually, Kara owns her name and rises above sexism in the most literal way possible.
Does the show preach feminism? .
After one episode, can anyone tell whether or not a show is worth watching? Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to hide the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. One thing I have found is sometimes the temptation is there by executives to alter things that are part of the DNA of what was so great about the comic book.
Doing this sets Supergirl apart from Superman. He even said that he was looking forward for her show’s premiere.
Do the powers look cool? .
But again, is the show any good? Well, it is very conventional. He’s had 12 years of adventures with his pal and now he’s a man. He’s worked out a bit more.
What’s this Supergirl TV series about anyways?
The real question is what else is going to fill up an hour of television each week. Transporter: The Series star Chris Vance will take on the role as the brutal, sinister Kryptonian military officer who is the antithesis of everything Supergirl stands for.
TV Insider shared Benoist’s comments about taking on the superhero role for the CBS series. “[It’s] similar to the way you would see Marlon Brando in the Donner Superman films, as a living computer that Kara is able to commune with”. “We absolutely debut them on the same page”.
