Outrage as Walmart sell Israeli Army soldier’s outfit as child’s Halloween costume
Walmart have sparked controversy by offering an Israeli Army soldier’s outfit as a children’s Halloween costume.
The costume, which resembles a uniform worn by Israeli soldiers in elite combat units, is available on the discount department store chain’s website for $27.44, reduced from $57.62.
In fact, the description of the item disturbingly boasts about “when Halloween time rolls around, make this item part of your child’s complete ensemble”.
A few blasted the get-up as poor taste – especially since it’s being sold during a time of heightened tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.
Here are a few reactions to the Israeli soldier costume on Twitter. Way to go teaching kids to dress up like murderers!
Another Halloween costume stocked by Walmart that drew outrage is a “Latex prosthetic nose flawless for an Arab Sheik”, featuring a large nose on a man clad in traditional Arab attire.
Several people have taken to Walmart’s website to condemn the costume in the reviews.
Walmart was also criticised for selling an accessory by Morris Costumes called ‘Arab “Sheik Fagin nose”‘.
This was criticised also criticised as being anti-Semitic by a few users on social media, for referring to the character – Fagin, in the Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, which allegedly plays on anti-Semitic stereotypes.
In 2013, the retailer sold a Osama bin Laden-themed Halloween costume, described as “Turban Beard Adult Halloween Instant Costume”.
