Marco Rubio Has Given Up On The Senate
In 2014, a year before he even announced his presidential campaign, Rubio was in the Top 15, missing 45 out of the 657 Senate votes taken that year – an abstention rate of 6.8%.
But I make that prediction gingerly, not boldly, because Rubio is a very unusual sort of front-runner.
A friend of Rubio’s said that the Florida senator “hates” the Senate.
“I was just there this Tuesday”, Rubio said.
“The all-or-nothing approach will continue to leave immigration-reform advocates with nothing”, Conant said. Each and every sitting U.S. Senator is granted special powers that their colleagues in the House of Representatives don’t possess – the most famous special privilege being the power to filibuster, when even a newly-elected member to the club can complicate the proceedings of the Senate floor by speaking for hours at a time. Sen.
Sanders showed new willingness to go after Clinton on Sunday, saying on CNN’s “State of the Union” that both Bill and Hillary Clinton supported a measure – the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as between one man and one woman – that was “homophobic”.
As Rubio has continued to rise in the polls, Trump has amped up his own attacks on the Florida senator’s immigration position.
“Unfortunately, we will not be able to move forward on this today, it appears”, Rubio said. But if he truly can’t stand the U.S. Senate as an institution and despises the job he is now in, he might want to think about quitting before his term is out.
Trying to appeal to younger voters is part of the 44-year-old Rubio’s strategy, which also touts a tougher foreign policy, repealing Obamacare, bolstering the military and opposing Common Core. If he is elected to the White House, he added, “we can begin to fix a few of these issues that I’ve been so frustrated we’ve been unable to address during my time in the Senate”.
The Republican establishment loves Rubio’s look and bio. “The truth of the matter is when I made a decision to run for the presidency, all of the same people that told me not to run for the Senate came out of the woodwork again and said it’s not your turn”, he said. So, when they’re not looking, we occasionally give a dose to the ones most morose.
Instead, by intentionally flying under the radar, Rubio’s campaign could be “setting themselves up for when they expect the Trumps and, maybe, the Carsons to collapse”.
RUBIO: Well, actually this is lower than what other people have missed.
“I’m going to support the Republican nominee, and I’m comfortable that it’s not going to be Donald Trump, and I’m increasingly confident that it’s going to be me”, he said. “I’m here talking to each of you about the future of America”.
Yet Rubio’s is the name on the lips of many political insiders.
Rubio avoided the pointed about his not attending committee hearings by claiming that he gets briefings.
“For two years, we just tried to slow-dance, and wait for the 2012 election”, Rubio said.
He scaled the political ladder in Florida at speed, culminating in a Senate seat in 2010 after a race he was never expected to win.
