Melissa Benoist Explains Why ‘Supergirl’ Is Feminist On ‘The Late Show With

As revealed in the closing moments of the Supergirl pilot, Kara’s aunt Astra (Laura Benanti) is on Earth and she’s targeting her own niece to strike back at Kara’s mother, Alura Zor-El (also played by Benanti). She’s the older cousin, tasked with watching over Kal-El, but got caught up in The Phantom Zone. She’s a character that we’ve created for the show, who doesn’t come from the comics. There’s a lot of “Him” floating around.

Superheroes are becoming as populous on TV as they are in movie theaters, probably even more so. And she does that well.

“I put on the cape and see that “S” and something transforms”, she said. Her interactions with pal Winn (Jeremy Jordan) are adorable, but no sparks. I’m not sure yet how this will work, but it’s definitely a mystery that I appreciate and want to learn more about. “I don’t think anyone is anxious about, ‘Oh my god, there’s not enough audience out there to watch both those shows.’ I think there will be”. This is just the kind of girl power that television sorely needs.

Leigh said it is great for her daughters to see a character like Supergirl, a girl that is as herself and not necessarily in the Supergirl part but as Kara Danvers, who is flawed.

After much anticipation, CBS’s Supergirl premiered with a bang, including a plane crash save that would have made Captain Sully jealous, and an alien criminal who escaped the Phantom Zone along with Kara when she was a little girl. But we will see.

According to the synopsis for the upcoming episode, Kara will face another prisoner from the Kryptonian jail. Alex is on a covert government team formed to track and contain the escapees. And that’s where this Supergirl show provides its biggest, and only, spark – because that media titan, named Cat Grant, is played by Calista Flockhart.

“I’m always excited when people are enthusiastic about the shows and for more people to be talking about the shows”.

“If I could supersize any food it would be an ice-cream drumstick (in) vanilla caramel, they’re so good”, she added. The second Greg Berlanti series of the night benefited from being the only original show airing at 10 pm with Castle being a re-run and Scorpion having started 30 minutes prior.
