Obama: ‘Playing Like a Girl Means You’re a Badass’
The World Cup squad gathered at the White House, with Obama calling out several players by name, including Abby Wambach, Carli Lloyd, Sydney Leroux, Becky Sauerbrunn, Megan Rapinoe and Heather O’Reilly, TMZ reported.
The USA women inspired many on their run to the title in Canada, and one fan in particular got the thrill of a lifetime when she got to introduce the President and the team.
The team took the opportunity to grab a picture with the president, who appeared just as excited as they were.
Thirteen-year-old Ayla Ludlow was watching the Federation Internationale de Football Association Women’s World Cup this past June when her brother came into the room and dimissed the event, telling her boys were “so much better at soccer than girls”. “It means drawing the largest TV audience for a soccer match, men or women’s, in American history”.
During a ceremony at the White House, Obama said the team’s victory had inspired the whole country.
Most importantly, he congratulated the women’s team for the active role that many of its members have played in changing the perception of women in professional sports.
The president also acknowledged team captain Carli Lloyd, who scored three goals against Japan in the final’s first 16 minutes and was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament.
“This team taught all of America’s children that playing like a girl means you’re a badass”, Obama said in his welcoming speech.
President Obama then commended the team’s performance on the field, as well as their efforts off the field with the #SheBelieves campaign. “What’s another candidate in the mix?” he said. I mean, I thought I was cool a few years ago when somebody made a bust of me out of butter.
“I don’t know, I think that’s a really, really tough spot to be in”.
