West Virginia vs. TCU

The Longhorns are neck-and-neck once again with Kansas atop the conference standings with seven conference matches left in Big 12 play.

Their three conference meetings have been decided by a combined five points, including overtime games the first two seasons when they also had identical records.

For as long and arduous as program-building can be, TCU’s breakthrough a year ago proved that fortunes can reverse quickly and unexpectedly.

Holding TCU’s offense is easier said than done, and quarterback Trevone Boykin has yet to be stopped this season.

The versatile Boykin started at quarterback the two times TCU prevailed in this matchup.

He averages 90 yards in receptions a game, far ahead of the next receiver on the chart, Daikiel Shorts, who is averaging 41.8 yards.

“They’re a lot better football team than 3-3. They’ve played all three of those teams that have only one loss between them”, Patterson said. If West Virginia can manage to keep it close it may come down to who has the ball last. The Fort Worth native went to Brewer High School in the city and initially joined Stephen F. Austin as a walk-on and Riverside City College before he latched on with the Mountaineers. Howard has thrown for 1,566 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions.

“It’s always exciting to play a big game like this”, Howard said. It’s a business trip. “Now we got in a league… and now I saw our resume is not good enough yet because we haven’t played anybody”. The over/under for this game is 75 total points. This TCU team can score but they also give up a large sum of points too. Doctson has 11 TDs in his last five games. Nickel back and top reserve corner Rick Rumph (grandmother’s death) isn’t expected to be available, and this will be WVU’s third game since Karl Joseph sustained a season-ending injury.

“He was just a great player, the safety that they had”, Patterson said.

The Mountaineers (3-3, 0-3 Big 12) will meet the Horned Frogs (7-0, 4-0) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, to continue what has been a thrilling back-and-forth series.
