Don Mattingly quickly moves on to Marlins job
The Marlins agreed to hire Mattingly as the next manager to a four year deal, according to a human being with knowledge of the situation.
Mattingly has seemd to be a fait accompli in Miami since he and the Dodgers parted ways late last week.
Mattingly proved to be fantastic at arguably the most important part of being a big league manager: he managed people.
The Marlins have hired Don Mattingly are their new manager, according to VICE Sports. The news is traveling fast. I’m not going to say whoever our next manager is will fit any mold. However, the Dodgers advanced beyond the NL Division Series just once under Mattingly.
Mattingly will be working under an owner known for meddling and second-guessing, but then he played for the master of those attributes with the Yankees, George Steinbrenner. The Mattingly announcement could possibly come as soon as the day after the World Series ends (if it does, indeed, get wrapped up). But his in-game strategy-especially late in games-opened him up to constant criticism from fans and sportswriters. The lure of the young and maturing Marlins roster was said to be a major enticement for Mattingly, which is understandable in the wake of the oft-contentious and ego driven Dodger clubhouse. The Dodgers were eliminated in the playoffs by the Mets and Mattingly previously took the team to the playoffs in three straight seasons. Mattingly spent his entire career entrenched at first base in the Bronx, and became one of the most famous-and beloved-Yankees of all-time.
Would a reinvigorated Mattingly be a good fit for the Marlins?
Mattingly’s skill set as a manager is what makes the potential of the Marlins with him at the reins so tantalizing. Miami’s payroll was less than a third of the Dodgers’ payroll last season.
Mattingly will not have to deal with the media scrutiny that comes from managing one of baseball’s great franchises, but working for Loria doens’t seem to exactly be a low-stress position either.
If their stars avoid injury and the Marlins can add a few pitching depth in the rotation and the bullpen, this is a team that could compete in the National League East in 2016. The Dodgers have not even been to the Fall Classic since 1988.
