South Dakota Students See Math, Reading Scores Slip Slightly
In 2013, the National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP), ranked Tennessee the fastest improving state in the country. North Carolina schools have been able to cut the proportion of students unable to perform at a basic level on the fourth-grade tests since 2000.
“We are working to raise academic standards, use data from a new state assessment, and develop a system for providing professional development to our educators”, Villar said in a statement. This year, he’s argued the opposite: that a few turbulence and a temporary drop in scores is likely while students and teachers adjust to the new standards. “We have to demand more from ourselves, our principals and our teachers”, Norvell said.
National math scores for fourth-graders and eighth-graders fell for the first time since the tests were introduced in 1990.
Only about a third of the nation’s eighth-graders were at proficient or above in math and reading. Eighth-grade scores declined as well.
Achievement gaps between white students and those who are black and Hispanic stayed the same in both grades from 2011 to this year, as did gaps between the genders and income groups.
Balow says despite Wyoming’s decent scores, there’s still room to improve.
State education officials said they were anxious to see how Nevada fared when its diverse demographics are taken into account. “The NAEP results show the positive effect of that work and make a strong case for state-led reform efforts like those included in the “Education Works” agenda”.
Fourth-grade reading declined in Arkansas from 219 in 2013 to 218 in 2015. Fourth-grade math scores for black students have been flat for six years.
The reading scores are also relatively unchanged from those in 2013 and are above or at the national average.
In a small state like New Hampshire, the tested population is about two-thirds of the total enrollment for the state in those two grade levels.
West Virginia’s fourth grade students also helped increase the state’s rankings. Ohio scores have shown no gain in more than a decade.
That commitment is exactly what is lacking, argues Daniela Farr on a blog for RI Can, an education advocacy organization in Rhode Island. “According to NAEP, neither desirable result has materialized”, says FairTest’s Bob Schaeffer.
Chris Minnich, executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers, echoed Duncan.
This week, the city school board requested an update on a promised literacy program, One Year Plus, for students with disabilities. “But I don’t think we need to put too much stock in one year’s test results giventhe tremendous progress that’s been made over the years”. Governor Phil Bryant, Lt. Governor Tate Reeves, Speaker Philip Gunn, the Legislature and the Department of Education have revolutionized education policy in the Magnolia State.
