Fiat Chrysler Recall: 900000 SUVs at Risk of Air Bag, Brake Trouble
The latest automobile manufacturer to grab the headlines for the wrong reasons is Fiat Chrysler, who has reportedly recalled nearly 900,000 vehicles due to multiple problems.
-These vehicles need their airbag control modules and impact sensors replaced. Thanks to an investigation into warranty claims, Fiat Chrysler was able to locate the problem.
The recall Friday by FCA U.S. covers certain 2003 Jeep Liberty and 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs.
Fiat Chrysler noted that the new recall does not involve Takata airbags. The company emphasized vehicles are not equipped with Takata air bags.
Moisture can build up in the anti-lock brake control module, disabling the system and the electronic stability control. The recall includes 151,000 left-drive Fiat Freemont SUVs sold overseas and 114,000 Dodge Journeys sold in Canada and Mexico. Technicians will apply a moisture sealant and replace electrical components if necessary.
The company said it was aware of seven injuries related to the problem but no accidents.
Regular, foundation braking functions are not affected. The company agreed to a record-setting $105 million settlement over its handling of 23 recall campaigns covering 11 million vehicles in July. The automaker announced that it anticipated more, costlier recalls in the future in the “automotive regulatory environment”.
