Honda recalls older Accords to fix air bag inflation problem
The recall’s main objective is to update side airbags’ Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) software for free.
Honda is recalling 303,904 Accord cars and also coupes in the United States for side-curtain air bags that could unintentionally set up, the firm stated late Thursday. Honda did not confirm whether the airbags were from Bosch, the same supplier that manufactured the side-curtain airbag controller as Fiat-Chrysler, but it did say it had provided the supplierincorrect thresholds that were too sensitive, asalso happened at Fiat-Chrysler. The airbag inadvertently deploys only when the ignition is on.
Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda.
The company says the recall affects 2008-2009 models of the Honda Accord and other midsize vehicles.
The automaker said that it received reports of 19 injuries related to the problem, which it blamed on the sensors being calibrated improperly, The New York Times noted.
Air bags that unexpectedly deploy increase the risk of a crash or injury. Honda dealers will update the side airbag software.
The recall is expected to start December 4. Honda’s number for this recall is JV4.
