Microsoft confirms automatic upgrades to Windows 10
Microsoft also announced a few subtle but non-trivial changes to the upgrade process for genuine users. “Our aspiration is for customers to choose Windows, and to love Windows”. Given that Microsoft is promising tons of updates delivered to Windows 10 constantly over the next several years, it’s a potential reason for pirates to consider an upgrade. No, definitely not. The authorities affirmed, ‘Early next year, we expect to be re-categorizing Windows 10 as a “Recommended Update”. As Microsoft explains in a a blog post, “depending upon your Windows Update settings, this may cause the upgrade process to automatically initiate on your device”.
“If you try and upgrade a non-genuine PC to Windows 10 today it says the free upgrade is only available to genuine PCs”, confirmed Mr Myerson. And if you do upgrade (whether intentionally or by accident, as the case may be) you can always roll back to whatever version of Windows you were running before that within 31 days.
Microsoft, which released Windows 10 on July 29, earlier this month said the operating system was on about 110 million devices. This means it won’t download and install automatically, but you’ll be able to select the update if you’d like.
Finally, Microsoft is making a few changes for users running non-Genuine (pirated) versions of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. In a bid to achieve that more aggressive strategy is what Microsoft is going to adopt and as a part of this it will be changing the status of Windows 10 to “Recommended Update”.
Forcing users to upgrade, however, is a double-edged sword: while a few might actually like Windows 10, others could be outraged with this approach and decide to go back to Windows 7 or a non-Windows OS altogether.
“Our original approach for the Windows 10 rollout included a two-step process: First, reserve, then later we notify you to start the upgrade process”. Owners of pirated or non-genuine copies of Windows 10 can purchase a legitimate Windows license through the Windows Store prior to commencing the upgrade process.
Users had previously slammed Microsoft for automatically pushing install files to their computers without approval, blowing out data caps for users on metered connections. Still, there could be scenarios where organizations will get offered the free upgrade across machines, and they possibly might use the Media Creation Tool to perform multiple upgrades. “That being said, we would encourage everyone to upgrade because Windows 10 is the best Windows ever – familiar, safer, faster, and full of innovations”.
