Paul Ryan Elected Speaker of the House

Ryan received 236 votes, including a supermajority of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of 39 conservatives that pushed out Boehner.

The 45-year-old Ryan, who had been the chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means until being elected speaker, was considered by many conservatives to be the only so-called “consensus candidate” for the Republican Party.

The Wisconsin congressman said he would return control over drafting legislation to committees and rank-and-file members, adding: “If you know the issue you should write the bill”.

“It’s not until you hold this gavel, stand in this spot, look out and see all 435 members of this House – as if all America is sitting right in front of you”, Ryan said in his acceptance speech.

His only opponent – conservative favorite Representative Daniel Webster – told his fans to not vote for him this morning, in an effort to make sure Ryan got the requisite 218 votes.

“Paul Ryan is a great policy mind with a proven record of working with others to find solutions to our nation’s challenges”, Brownback said in a statement. “I’m not interested in laying blame”.

Boehner’s resignation caused a month of turbulence among Republicans when the candidacy of the heir-apparent, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, was derailed.

“We are not settling scores, we are wiping the slate clean”, said Speaker Ryan.

Ryan laid out an ambitious agenda in his remarks, calling on lawmakers to help fix the tax code, grow the economy, strengthen the military and pay down the debt. Change in general regardless of the two personalities, they are both good people. “Instead of trying to stop the majority, they might try to become the majority”, he said. “I believe a greater clarity between us can lead to a greater charity among us”. Also in attendance was Mitt Romney, the formerMassachusetts governor and 2012 GOP presidential nominee who chose Ryan as his running mate.
