Fans, expect `bittersweet` ending to `Game of Thrones`
George R.R. Martin’s comments about how his series Game of Thrones will end are nearly as hard to figure out as all the fan theories about Jon Snow.
“I think you need to have a few hope”, he said Wednesday of how he envisions the end of the series. To round out the pageantry – and this is the part to really get excited about – Northwestern’s pep band is scheduled to perform a medley of music from the Game of Thrones TV show, which will presumably be accompanied by a formation of a few sort.
Fans can even add a special “Game of Thrones” filter to their photos on Facebook. “Myself, I’m attractive to the bittersweet ending”, Martin said.
“I think Tolkien did this brilliantly. I didn’t understand that when I was a kid – when I read Return of the King”, he said, noting that it’s too simple and unrealistic to tie up a quest with a flawless bow.
At the end of the third novel in Tolkien’s trilogy, Frodo succeeds in his mission to destroy the ring that symbolises evil, but when he returns home to the Shire, he finds it in chaos.
How do you think Game of Thrones should end?
The television series has not always followed Martin’s writings to the letter, however, so it’s possible producers will choose a more crowd-pleasing ending.
Martin also admitted he did not expect the HBO show to catch up to the events in the books quite as quickly as it did.
“It doesn’t influence the writing I’m doing now except to turn up the stress”, he told students during a sold-out discussion at Northwestern Medill School of Journalism, where he was accepting a Hall of Achievement alumni award.
